Crowning of Mary Statue

Mary 2One of the newest feasts of Mary on our liturgical calendar occurs this month. Aug. 22 is the memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was added to the church’s calendar in 1954, by Pope Pius XII. Twenty years later, Saint Pope Paul VI said of this feast: “On this occasion, we contemplate her who, seated beside the King of ages, shines forth as Queen and intercedes as Mother” (Marialis Cultis, no. 6).

Let us pray,

Merciful Father,
You have given us the mother of your Son to be our queen and mother. With the support of her prayers, may we come to share the glory of your children in the kingdom of heaven.  We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and
ever.
